THE MYSTERIOUS EDGE OF THE HEROIC WORLD
by E.L. Konigsberg

"ninety percent of who you are is invisible."

Amedeo Kaplan seems just like any other new kid who has moved into the town of St. Malo, Florida, a navy town where new faces are the norm. But Amedeo has a secret, a dream: More than anything in the world, he wants to discover something -- a place, a process, even a fossil -- some treasure that no one realizes is there until he finds it. And he would also like to discover a true friend to share these things with.

William Wilcox seems like an unlikely candidate for friendship: an aloof boy who is all edges and who owns silence the way other people own words. When Amedeo and William find themselves working together on a house sale for Amedeo's eccentric neighbor, Mrs. Zender, Amedeo has an inkling that both his wishes may come true. For Mrs. Zender's mansion is crammed with memorabilia of her long life, and there is a story to go with every piece. Soon the boys find themselves caught up in one particular story -- a story that links a sketch, a young boy's life, an old man's reminiscence, and a painful secret dating back to the outrages of Nazi
Germany. It's a story that will take them to the edge of what they know about heroism and the mystery of the human heart.

Two-time Newbery winner E. L. Konigsburg spins a magnificent tale of art,
discovery, friendship, history, and truth.

Jinx by Meg Cabot

The only thing Jean Honeychurch hates more than her boring name (not Jean Marie, or Jeanette, just . . . Jean) is her all-too-appropriate nickname, Jinx. Misfor-tune seems to follow her everywhere she goes—which is why she's thrilled to be moving in with her aunt and uncle in New York City. Maybe when she's halfway across the country, Jinx can finally outrun her bad luck. Or at least escape the havoc she's caused back in her small hometown.

But trouble has definitely followed Jinx to New York. And it's causing big problems for her cousin Tory, who is not happy to have the family black sheep around. Beautiful, glamorous Tory is hiding a dangerous secret—one that she's sure Jinx is going to reveal.

Jinx is beginning to realize it isn't just bad luck she's been running from. It's something far more sinister . . . and the curse Jinx has lived under since the day she was born might just be the only thing that can save her life.

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

If Naomi had picked tails, she would have won the coin toss. She wouldn’t have had to go back for the yearbook camera, and she wouldn’t have hit her head on the steps. She wouldn’t have woken up in an ambulance with amnesia. She certainly would have remembered her boyfriend, Ace. She might even have remembered why she fell in love with him in the first place. She would understand why her best friend, Will, keeps calling her “Chief.” She’d know about her mom’s new family. She’d know about her dad’s fiancĂ©e. She never would have met James, the boy with the questionable past and the even fuzzier future, who tells her he once wanted to kiss her. She wouldn’t have wanted to kiss him back.

But Naomi picked heads.

Love, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Love, Stargirl picks up a year after Stargirl ends and reveals the new life of the beloved character who moved away so suddenly at the end of Stargirl. The novel takes the form of "the world's longest letter," in diary form, going from date to date through a little more than a year's time. In her writing, Stargirl mixes memories of her bittersweet time in Mica, Arizona, with involvements with new people in her life.

In Love, Stargirl, we hear the voice of Stargirl herself as she reflects on time, life, Leo, and—of course—love.

Raw Danger! review by Alex Shirley

System: PS2
Rating: T for Teen
Company: Agetec
Date Released: June 2007

Just by looking at the cover, you can tell that this is one INTENSE game. Before I tell you about the overall ups and downs of this game, let me start off with an excerpt that really won't give that much information about it...

You start the game as a 22-year-old waiter, serving guests at a Christmas banquet, which is also celebrating the construction of an underground system of structures in the city of Del Ray, New York. The year is 2010. So far, all is well. You follow a waitress around, helping her, and occasionally get scolded by your boss. The Head Chef is also making you rush back and forth between guests. But, you're getting paid, right?

But disturbing things are happening. A leak breaks out in the hallway, and a pipe is dripping. And when you give the mayor his water, his assistant is urgent. The managers round up the guests and take them to the main hall. You're in the bathroom to check for more guests, and... the world falls apart.

You can find this beginning online, but basically, you're trapped in the building as rising water licks at your feet. You constantly dodge rushing waters, broken electrical outlets, and crumbling floors. Again, you're with the waitress, and as you try to move through the city, a story and a huge conspiracy theory becomes apparent to you. You solve the mystery of the flood and a murder by playing several characters, including a doctor, a convict, a taxi driver, and a high school student. All of these people are somehow connected, and they are all in huge danger.

Be aware, Agetec doesn't have access to the technology of the ages (coincidentally) so the graphics, although pretty good, aren't the best. The character's feet will more than once melt into a wall or object, and minor characters have the same response to your presence every time you try to talk to them. Plus, when someone turns around, they don't walk, they rotate.

The controls are generally easy to use. That is, before you're trying to push a cart or a ladder. You will constantly be frustrated by your inability to move the object in the direction you want it to, but luckily, it doesn't happen so much. Other characters will ask for your help, even ones that you will play later in the game, so you will have to move rubble, drive cars, and hang from wires. This is generally easy, if you know what to do.

The interesting part about the game is that whatever you do in previous levels will sometimes dramatically affect what happen later in the game. If you treat your partner right, they could consider you your best friend or even your boyfriend. And if you move a piece of rubble out of the way to pass through, it will create a problem for the next character you play. Even items you leave inside a dumpster will stay there in order for someone else to find it.

That's it. Believe me, it's an awesome game! If you're not too accustomed to state-of-the-art graphics, you may want to play it again and again. You can find it at most GameStop stores, and sometimes a rental shop. It's only $14.95 + tax, and it's a deal! Hope you have fun!

Banned Books Week

Every year, libraries all over the country celebrate Banned Books Week, which is really a celebration of our freedom to read whatever we want. Us librarians care a lot about that sort of thing--and we work really hard to make sure YOU have the chance to read whatever your heart desires, which means not banning books!

Books get banned when someone thinks that book shouldn't be in a library for any number of reasons. Sometimes people think it is offensive, inappropriate, or simply bad literature. Some interesting examples of books that have been banned over the years are:

1984
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Animal Farm
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Beloved
Brave New World
Catcher in the Rye
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Color Purple
The Egypt Game
Fahrenheit 451
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Gone with the Wind
James and the Giant Peach
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Little House on the Prairie
To Kill a Mockingbird
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Where's Waldo?
A Wrinkle in Time

In our library, we'll have some of these books on display, as well as some cool photos up of your teachers holding their favorite banned books.

If you have any questions about Banned Book Week, please come ask me!

Welcome back!

We've been back in classes for a week! I hope all of you are settling in well and catching up with your friends and making new ones.

There's a lot of new stuff happening here this year. You should definitely come visit and see our new carpet and layout. Make yourself comfortable in The Nook, the new reading area which was designed with the help of two of your classmates, Ariel Landers and Kim Marker. Be sure to tell them how nice it looks.

If you have any questions about where things are now that we've moved things around, please do not be afraid to ask me for help!

As usual, we have tons of new books in, including all the brand-new YA titles. I also bought a bunch of new DVDs that you can borrow whenever you want. And don't forget about our ginormous game library, which you can use here or take home if you're a boarder.

We've got a bunch of free books in our paperback exchange box at the front of the library. Take one and donate one of yours that you've already read. (Faculty and staff, this goes for you, too.)

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Upper School Book Group, please email me. Our first book is going to be The Book Thief. We'll try to meet at least once a trimester, and we'll have lots of snacks. I hope you'll consider joining!

Okay, that's it for now. Have an amazing start to the school year, and remember that you are always welcome in the library!
